ban midouThe Man with the Evil EyeBan is from the anime/manga series Get Backers, created by Yuya Aoki and drawn by Rando Ayamine. The manga was originally serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shounen Magazine from 1999 to 2007, and then it was compiled in 39 volumes. The anime was produced by Studio DEEN and ran for 49 episodes from 2002 to 2003, not covering the whole story but it was still a solid and well planned adaptation. Getbackers Dakkanya (ゲットバッカーズ -奪還屋, literally Get Backers - Recovery Service) is the story of Ban Midou and Ginji Amano, two guys who run a very particular business: recover objects (which can be a cat, a videogame, or an atomic bomb) for people for a fee. Of course, they possess great abilities and more than one trick to achieve their objectives, plus mysterious pasts who will hunt them in the present. (more about the series?) Midou Ban (美堂蛮) is 18 years old in the manga and 21 in the anime. He works with his partner Ginji retrieving lost objects, mostly in the area of Shinjuku. Known as the Battle Genius, or the Jagan man, Ban is wise, intelligent, and skillful at a wide range of fields, but also stubborn and is often reluctant to help people. Also, he has the very funny habit of giving people strange and despective nicknames, such as calling Ginji "electric eel", or MakubeX "computer boy". Ban drives a Subaru 360 (like a psycho), and smokes, a habit he took from Yamato, a partner from his past. Speaking of it, Ban carries some heavy weighs on his shoulders, which he will find solutions for as the story progresses. In terms of abilities, Ban has two main ones: the Jagan, an unique gift which allows Ban to make a person dream for one minute, and the Snake Bite, which is the superhuman strength in his arms. With it, Ban has a grab of 200 kgs. on his hands, allowing him to break and lift nearly anything. (more about him?) |
