a snail that meows
As most of us know, Gary is a character from the cartoon series SpongeBob SquarePants. He is SpongeBob's pet snail, but he acts like a cat (he meows, eats special food, etc.), and lives with him in his pineapple-shaped house. This snail is more intelligent and down-to-earth than his owner, who sometimes receives wise advice from his pet (for some reason, he understands his mews). Gary attends the phone, gets mail, and does many things for Bob.
In addition, some times Gary is shown as a very intellectual 'person', ie. he loves literature and plays the violin and drumbs. It's also shown that Gary knows how to tie shoes. In the episode "Sleepy Time" (when Spongebob visits other characters' dreams from his own), Gary talks in antique British English, using very poetical words (however, he ends up driving Bob out as everyone else).
Gary has a special dedicated to him, called "Have You Seen This Snail?" in which he leaves Bob after he forgot (once again) to feed him, and an kind old lady picks him up. Problem is, she's crazier than Bob...
